Dropbox not syncing on a new computer: how to fix it

Steps

  1. Open dropbox.com in a web browser and sign in. If you can see your files there, the account is fine and only the app on the new computer needs fixing.
  2. Download the Dropbox app only from dropbox.com/install, install it, and sign in with the same email you used on the old computer.
  3. If your paid plan is under an old email you can no longer open, such as a school or former work address, use the Dropbox lost email access page at help.dropbox.com and follow the account recovery steps. Have your plan details or a recent receipt handy.
  4. Once you are signed in, click the Dropbox icon near the clock (Windows) or at the top of the screen (Mac) and check that it says Up to date or Syncing, not Paused.
  5. If it says Paused, click the icon, open the menu, and choose Resume syncing. If it says out of space, check that you are signed in to the paid account and not a new free one.
  6. Still stuck? Sign out of the app, restart the computer, and sign in again. On Windows, also make sure the Dropbox folder is on a drive with enough free space.

Common questions

Will I lose my files if I sign in on a new computer?

No. Your files stay on Dropbox and download to the new computer after you sign in.

I made a new free account by mistake. What now?

Sign out of the app and sign back in with the email tied to your paid plan. You can delete the extra free account later from dropbox.com.
