Facebook keeps asking for a security check or CAPTCHA and will not let me log in

When Facebook sees a sign in it does not recognize, it asks you to prove you are a person. Sometimes the check gets stuck and comes back over and over. The cause is usually old stored browser data, a VPN or ad blocker, or too many tries in a row. Work through these steps in order.

Steps

  1. Stop trying for about an hour. Many tries in a row make Facebook more suspicious and can keep the check coming back.
  2. Use the device and the internet connection you normally use for Facebook, such as your home Wi-Fi, not a library or hotel network.
  3. Turn off any VPN, and pause ad blockers or privacy extensions in your browser. These can stop the puzzle from loading or hide the button to continue.
  4. Try a different way in. If you use a computer, try the Facebook app on your phone, or the other way around. You can also try a different browser such as Chrome, Edge or Safari.
  5. Clear the stored data for Facebook in your browser. In Chrome, click the padlock or settings icon next to the web address, choose Site settings, then Delete data. Then close the browser fully and open it again.
  6. Make sure the date and time on your computer or phone are set automatically. A wrong clock can make security checks fail.
  7. If the check asks for a code by text or email, use the newest code only, and check your spam folder for the email.
  8. If you are asked to upload a photo or a video selfie, do it in good light with your face fully in view, then wait. Facebook can take up to a day or two to review it.
  9. If you still cannot get in, go to facebook.com/login/identify on a computer or phone you have used before and follow the steps to recover your account.
  10. Never pay anyone who offers to unlock your Facebook account by phone, text or social media message. Facebook support does not call you and never asks for payment or gift cards.

Common questions

Why does Facebook keep asking me to prove I am not a robot?

Usually because it sees a sign in from a new place, a VPN, old stored browser data, or many tries in a row. Waiting and using your usual device often fixes it.

Is my account hacked if I see this?

Not always. It is often just a safety check. If you also got emails about a changed password or email address you did not make, treat it as hacked and use facebook.com/hacked.

How long does a Facebook photo or video check take?

It can take from a few minutes to a couple of days. Trying again and again does not speed it up.

Is there a Facebook phone number I can call?

Facebook does not offer phone support for logins. Numbers online that claim to be Facebook support are often scams.

Can Ellis help me with this?

Yes. Ellis can talk you through each step by phone while you sit at your computer or phone, and will never ask for your passwords or bank details. Ellis is an AI assistant, and it will tell you so.
