HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw not printing from Windows: how to fix it

The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw is a solid printer, but Windows often loses track of it after an update, a Wi-Fi change, or a power outage. Jobs pile up in the queue, the printer shows Offline, or nothing happens at all. The printer itself is usually fine. Work through these steps in order and test a page after each one.

Steps

  1. Look at the printer screen first. If it shows a paper jam, an empty tray, or a toner message, clear that before anything else. Press the Home button so the screen is on its main page.
  2. Turn the printer off with its power button, unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds, then plug it straight into a wall outlet, not a power strip, and turn it on. Restart the Windows computer too.
  3. Check the connection. On the printer touch screen, tap the Wireless icon or the Ethernet icon and make sure it shows Connected and an IP address. If you use Wi-Fi, it must be on the same home network as the computer.
  4. Clear stuck jobs. On the computer open Settings, then Bluetooth and devices, then Printers and scanners. Click the M281fdw, click Open print queue, then open the three dots or Printer menu and choose Cancel all documents.
  5. Turn off Use Printer Offline. In the same print queue window, open the Printer menu and make sure Use Printer Offline is not checked.
  6. Make it the default printer. In Printers and scanners, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer, then click the M281fdw and choose Set as default.
  7. Run the built in fixer. In Printers and scanners click the M281fdw, then Run the troubleshooter, or use the free HP Print and Scan Doctor from hp.com on the official HP support site.
  8. Remove and add the printer again. Click the M281fdw, choose Remove, restart the computer, then go back to Printers and scanners and click Add device. Pick the M281fdw when it appears.
  9. Install the full HP driver if Windows still fails. Go to support.hp.com, search for M281fdw, and download the full feature software and driver for your version of Windows. Only use hp.com, never a download site from an ad.
  10. Print a test page from the printer itself. On the touch screen open Setup, then Reports, then Configuration Report. If that prints, the printer is healthy and the problem is only on the computer side.
  11. Never call a printer support number from a popup or a search ad. HP does not charge to fix a driver by phone, and those numbers are often scams that ask for remote access or payment.

Common questions

Why does my HP M281fdw say Offline when it is turned on?

Usually Windows lost the printer address after a Wi-Fi or power change. Restarting both, checking the printer shows Connected, and removing and adding the printer again fixes most cases.

Do I need to buy a new printer?

Almost never. If the printer can print its own Configuration Report from the touch screen, the printer works and the fix is on the computer.

Is HP Smart required?

No. The HP Smart app can help, but the M281fdw also works with the regular Windows printer settings or the full HP driver from support.hp.com.

Will removing the printer delete my documents?

No. Removing the printer from Windows only removes the connection. Your files are not touched.
