Steps

  1. Open your email provider website in Safari and sign in. If that works, the account is fine and the phone needs a fix.
  2. Turn on airplane mode for 10 seconds, then turn it off, to refresh the connection.
  3. Open Settings, then Mail, then Accounts. Tap the account and make sure Mail is switched on.
  4. If you see "Sign In" or a password message, tap it and enter your password again. Gmail and Outlook may need an app specific password if two step verification is on.
  5. If it still fails, delete the account from Settings, Mail, Accounts and add it again. Your email stays on the server.
  6. Update iOS from Settings, General, Software Update.

No. Mail lives on your provider servers. Removing the account from the phone only removes the local copy.
