McAfee says your subscription expired or keeps popping up: what to do
Many new laptops come with a free McAfee trial. When the trial ends, McAfee starts asking you to pay, and scam websites copy the same McAfee logo to scare people into paying them instead. Your computer is not broken, and you do not have to buy anything today. Windows already includes free protection called Windows Security. Work through these steps in order.

Steps
Do not click Renew, Scan now or any phone number inside the popup. Close it with the X. If it covers the whole screen, press Alt and F4 together, or hold the power button until the computer turns off, then turn it back on.
Look at the popup closely. If it shows the name Chrome or Edge with a website address under it, it came from a website, not from McAfee, even if it has the McAfee logo. Those are always fake. A real McAfee message comes from the McAfee app and shows no website address.
Stop the fake website popups in Edge: open Edge, click the three dots at the top right, then Settings, then Cookies and site permissions, then Notifications. Under Allow, remove any site you do not know.
Stop the fake website popups in Chrome: open Chrome, click the three dots at the top right, then Settings, then Privacy and security, then Site settings, then Notifications. Under Allowed to send notifications, remove any site you do not know.
Decide if you want to keep paying for McAfee. If you already pay for it and want to keep it, renew only inside the McAfee app or by typing mcafee.com into the address bar yourself. Never renew from a popup, an email link or a phone call.
Check what you are being charged for. Sign in at mcafee.com with the email you used to buy it and open your account. There you can see each subscription, including add-ons like PC Optimizer, and turn auto-renewal off for anything you do not want.
Know that PC Optimizer is an extra paid tune-up program, not virus protection. Your computer stays protected without it. If it keeps asking you to reactivate and you do not want it, turn off its auto-renewal in your McAfee account and uninstall it.
If you do not want McAfee at all, uninstall it: click Start, then Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps. Find each item with McAfee in the name, click the three dots next to it, choose Uninstall, then restart the computer.
If McAfee will not uninstall cleanly, search the McAfee support site for the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool, also called MCPR. Download it only from mcafee.com, run it, then restart.
Make sure Windows Security is on. Click Start, type Windows Security and open it. Under Virus and threat protection you should see a green check. Windows Security usually turns itself back on after McAfee is removed. Then run a Quick scan.
If you paid someone from a popup or a phone call, or let them onto your computer, call the number on the back of your bank card and tell them it was a scam. Then change your email password from a different device.
Common questions
Is the McAfee subscription expired message real?
It can be. A real one comes from the McAfee app that came with your computer when the free trial ends. A fake one comes from a website and shows a browser name and a web address. Either way, you do not have to pay right away, because Windows Security protects you for free.
Do I need McAfee if I have Windows 10 or 11?
Most home users do not. Windows Security is built into Windows 10 and 11, it is free, and it updates itself. If you like McAfee and already pay for it, keeping it is fine too. Just do not run two antivirus programs at once.
What is McAfee PC Optimizer?
It is an extra paid program from McAfee that cleans up and speeds up your computer. It is not antivirus. You can turn off its renewal in your McAfee account and uninstall it without making your computer less safe.
Will uninstalling McAfee leave my computer unprotected?
No. Windows Security usually turns itself back on once McAfee is gone. Open Windows Security after you restart and check for the green check under Virus and threat protection.
I gave a popup my card number. What now?
Call the number on the back of your card right away and tell them it was a scam so they can stop the charge and send a new card. Do not call any number the popup gave you.
