New HP Envy printer (like the Envy 6155): how to set it up and start using it

Most new HP Envy trouble comes from doing setup steps out of order, a printer that never joined the home Wi-Fi, or the HP app asking for an account before you have printed anything. Going step by step avoids all three.

Steps

  1. Take off all the blue tape and packing pieces, inside and out. Plug the printer in, turn it on, and choose your language and country on the printer screen.
  2. Open the ink door, take the new cartridges out of their wrappers, pull the plastic tab off each one, and click them into place. Load plain paper in the tray and let the printer print and scan its alignment page if it asks.
  3. Download the HP Smart app on the phone or computer you will print from (App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Store, or 123.hp.com on a Mac). Keep that device near the printer and on your home Wi-Fi.
  4. Open HP Smart and tap Add printer or the plus sign. It finds the new printer and puts it on your Wi-Fi for you. If it asks for your Wi-Fi password, type it carefully. If your router has two networks, the 2.4 GHz one works best.
  5. When the printer shows a solid blue Wi-Fi light, print a test page from HP Smart or from any document with File, then Print, and pick the HP Envy.
  6. To print from an iPhone or iPad, open a photo or email, tap the share button, then Print, and choose the HP Envy. On Android, use Print from the menu or the HP Smart app.
  7. To copy, put the page face down on the scanner glass, close the lid, and press Copy on the printer screen. To scan to your phone or computer, open HP Smart and tap Scan.
  8. HP Smart may offer HP+ or Instant Ink. You can skip both. They are optional ink plans and the printer works without them.

Common questions

Do I need an HP account to use my Envy?

HP Smart may ask you to sign in, and some features need it, but the printer prints from a computer or phone over Wi-Fi without signing up for an ink plan.

My computer cannot find the printer. What now?

Check that the computer and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network, restart both, then add the printer again in HP Smart. A USB cable works as a backup while you sort out Wi-Fi.

Should I sign up for Instant Ink?

Only if you want ink mailed to you on a monthly plan. It is optional. Regular HP cartridges from a store work fine.
