Steps

  1. Close Outlook completely. Check the system tray near the clock to make sure it is not still running.
  2. Open Control Panel, then Credential Manager, then Windows Credentials. Remove any entries that mention Outlook, Office, or MicrosoftOffice16.
  3. Open Outlook again and sign in once. Tick the box to remember your credentials if it appears.
  4. If you use Microsoft 365 for work, open Settings, then Accounts, then Access work or school, and disconnect then reconnect the account.
  5. Check your date and time are correct and set to update automatically. A wrong clock breaks sign-in.
  6. Last resort: create a new Outlook profile from Control Panel, Mail, Show Profiles, Add. Your email stays on the server, so you do not lose messages.

Common questions

Is my account hacked if I keep getting prompts?

Usually not. But if you also got a verification code you did not request, change your password from the Microsoft account website and review recent sign-in activity.

Does this fix the same problem on a Mac?

The idea is the same. Open Keychain Access, search for Outlook or Office, delete those entries, then sign in again.
