Quicken will not open on Windows, or flashes and disappears: how to fix it

When Quicken will not open, your money data is almost always still safe. Quicken keeps it in a data file (it ends in .QDF) inside your Documents folder, separate from the program. The usual causes are Quicken still running in the background from last time, a Windows update that left it half updated, a stuck data file, or an install that needs repairing. Work through these in order and stop as soon as it opens.

Steps

  1. Restart the computer the normal way: click Start, then the power button, then Restart. This clears a Quicken window that is stuck in the background, which is the most common reason it will not open.
  2. If it still will not open, press Ctrl, Shift and Esc together to open Task Manager. Look for anything named Quicken or qw.exe, click it, and choose End task. Then try opening Quicken again.
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key while you double click the Quicken icon, and keep holding it until a window appears. This tells Quicken to start without opening your last data file. If it opens, choose File, then Open Quicken File, and pick your file from Documents, Quicken.
  4. Check for a Quicken update. If Quicken opens even briefly, go to Help, then Check for Updates. Quicken often stops opening after Windows updates until it gets its own update too.
  5. Make sure Windows is up to date: click Start, then Settings, then Windows Update, then Check for updates. Install what it finds and restart.
  6. Repair Quicken: click Start, then Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps. Find Quicken, click the three dots or the name, and choose Modify or Repair if it is offered. Follow the prompts and restart.
  7. If repair does not help, reinstall it. Sign in at quicken.com with your Quicken ID, download the installer from My Account, then uninstall Quicken from Installed apps and install the new copy. Uninstalling the program does not delete your data file in Documents.
  8. When Quicken opens again, open your data file and make a backup right away: File, then Backup and Restore, then Backup Quicken File. Save a copy to a USB drive or another folder.
  9. Only download Quicken from quicken.com. Never call a phone number from a popup or a search ad that says it is Quicken support. Real Quicken support will not ask you to install remote access apps or pay with gift cards.

Common questions

Will I lose my Quicken data if I reinstall?

No. Your data lives in a separate file, usually in Documents, then Quicken, ending in .QDF. Uninstalling and reinstalling the program leaves that file alone. Making a backup first is still a good idea if Quicken opens at all.

Quicken shows a box for a second and then it disappears. What does that mean?

That usually means Quicken started, hit a problem with an update or the last data file, and closed. Holding Ctrl while opening it, then a repair or reinstall, fixes this most of the time.

Do I need to pay for Quicken to open my old data?

Current Quicken versions need an active membership for full use. If your membership lapsed, newer versions may open in a limited view only mode. Check My Account at quicken.com to see your status before reinstalling.

It started after I came back from vacation. Why?

When a computer is off or unused for a while, Windows and Quicken often install several updates at once the next time it starts. A restart, then Check for updates in both, usually settles it.
