How to reinstall Norton after a computer repair or reset
After a computer repair, a Windows reset or a new hard drive, Norton is often gone even though your subscription is still paid. You do not need to buy it again. Your subscription lives in your Norton account, not on the computer, so you can sign in and install it again for free. Work through these steps in order.
Free human help is at capacity right now. If you want help while you fix this, Ellis, our AI assistant, can help you by phone now. The first 5 minutes are free when you call (928) 272-0355. Steps
Find your Norton account email. It is usually the email address you used when you bought Norton. Look in your email for a Norton receipt or renewal notice to confirm which address it is.
Type the address yourself. Open your web browser and type my.norton.com into the address bar. Do not use a link from an email, a popup or a search ad, because fake Norton pages are very common.
Sign in to your Norton account. If you do not remember the password, click Forgot your password on the real Norton sign in page and follow the email it sends you.
Check your subscription. After you sign in, look for your Device Security or Norton 360 subscription. It shows how many devices it covers and when it renews. If the old computer still counts as a device, you can remove it there to free up a spot.
Click Download or Install on this device. Save the file, then open it from your Downloads folder and let it run. Click Yes if Windows asks for permission.
Wait for it to finish and restart if it asks. Norton will run its first update and scan. This can take 10 to 20 minutes on a freshly repaired computer.
If the installer says another antivirus is in the way, the repair shop may have installed a different one. On Windows 11 open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, find the other antivirus, and uninstall it. Then run the Norton installer again.
On a Mac, open the downloaded file, drag Norton into Applications if asked, and allow it in System Settings, then Privacy and Security, when the Mac asks you to approve it.
Never call a phone number from a popup, email or text that says your Norton expired or renewed. Real Norton support will not ask you to install AnyDesk or TeamViewer, or to pay with gift cards.
Common questions
Do I have to pay for Norton again after a repair?
No. If your subscription has not expired, you can install it again for free from your Norton account on the same number of devices you paid for.
I cannot remember which email I used for Norton. What now?
Search your email for Norton to find an old receipt. The address that got the receipt is almost always your account email.
The repair shop installed a different antivirus. Do I need both?
No. Running two antivirus programs at once can slow the computer down. Pick one and uninstall the other.
I got an email saying Norton renewed for hundreds of dollars. Is that real?
Often it is a scam. Do not call the number in the email. Sign in at my.norton.com yourself and check your real subscription there.
