Printer says offline, will not take paper, or prints streaky? Start here.
Most printer problems are one of four things: the computer lost track of the printer, the paper path is blocked, the tray sensor is confused, or the ink system needs a cleaning. You can check all four yourself.
Want someone to talk you through it? Call Ellis, our AI phone assistant. The first 5 minutes are free, no card needed. If you want more time, it is $19 one time for up to 30 minutes of phone help, used over 14 days. No subscription.
Want Ellis to work on your computer with you, only after you say it is okay? $79 one time, up to 60 minutes. Both are refundable anytime: just ask with a reason at joe@adorellc.pro or text 928-272-0355.
A real caller rated Ellis 10 out of 10 in October 2026, after a Mac sign-in error that blocked their design software was fixed in one 25 minute call.
Printer shows offline
Turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. Wait until it shows ready or connected.
Restart the computer. That clears a stuck print queue more often than you would expect.
On Windows open Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Printers & scanners, pick the printer, Open print queue, and make sure Use Printer Offline is not checked. Cancel any stuck jobs.
Still offline? Remove the printer and add it again. A Wi-Fi printer that keeps dropping usually needs its address reserved in the router.
Paper tray or "load paper" errors
Pull the tray out fully. Check for a torn scrap of paper or a sticky note in the slot behind it.
Fan the stack of paper, square it up, and slide the side guides until they just touch the paper. Guides that are too tight or too loose cause most feed errors.
Do not overfill. Keep the stack below the fill line on the tray.
Match the paper size on the printer screen to what is in the tray. A tray set to Legal with Letter paper inside will refuse to print.
If it says paper jam with no paper inside, open every door and look with a flashlight for small pieces near the rollers.
Streaky, faded or wrong colors
Print a quality check or nozzle check page from the printer menu.
Run one cleaning cycle, then print the check page again. Stop when the gaps are gone. Too many cleanings waste ink.
After new cartridges, let the printer sit an hour, then clean once more. Some off-brand cartridges never match the color exactly.
Ellis tells you it is an AI, then asks what is going on.
It gives you one step at a time and waits. You can interrupt, ask it to repeat, or ask it to slow down.
After 5 free minutes, you choose: hang up, or pay $19 one time for up to 30 minutes of phone help.
